Ingredient Spotlight: Jojoba Oil

For those still unfamiliar with it, fans of jojoba oil say it nourishes and moisturises skin like no other substance on earth. It is renowned as nature’s very own wrinkle fighter, is a natural antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, hypoallergenic analgesic and contains very powerful antioxidants, fatty acids, and vitamins A, D, and E. To put it mildly: you need it in your life.
Not to confuse matters, but jojoba “oil” is actually a wax ester, and it has remarkably similar properties to our skin’s own sebum. This means the “oil” is able to penetrate deeply, reaching below the top layer of skin for maximum nourishment. Perhaps best of all, it can be used on any skin type, from dry and sensitive to acne-prone.
A few reasons why you should look out for it in your skincare are:
- Jojoba oil is lighter than many other face oils and easily absorbed into the skin, making it a great “starter” oil if you’re not used to using it on your face. We think a facial oil is a must for just about everyone, but understand that for oilier types it seems counterintuitive. We say go forth and use one – and jojoba is a great place to start.
- It doesn’t evaporate like water-based moisturisers, which is very important when your skin is exposed to the environment. Studies have shown that jojoba oil can deliver a substantial, long-acting layer of moisture, meaning it goes straight to work and keeps its nose to the grindstone for some time after.
- It is non-acnegenic. Because jojoba oil is very similar to our own skin’s oils, its use can trick the skin into thinking it has produced enough oil and thus balances oil production, without promoting acne or other skin problems. Jojoba also naturally deters microbes, helping to prevent the growth of bacteria on the skin.
- Jojoba Oil comes highly recommended for people with sensitive skin (including psoriasis and eczema) because of its gentle nature. Applying jojoba oil to compromised skin can actually help reduce flare-ups due to its anti-inflammatory properties, easing the effects of eczema and rosacea and keeping skin calm and comfortable. Vitamin E and B-complex vitamins also help in skin repair and damage control.
Some of our favourite jojoba-containing, clean beauty wonders are:
This little magic stick contains jojoba oil to moisturise lips and skin, while Vitamin E nourishes and coconut oil protects. Use it on cuticles and even as a glossy skin and eyelid highlight with zero chance of clogging pores.
This super luxe and protective day cream delivers plump, firm skin with a beautifully dewy finish. As well as a complex of bioactivated lipids and brown marine algae extract, it uses jojoba and sweet almond oil, in combination with botanical squalane and shea butter, to help restore the skin’s natural lipid balance.
An amazing multi-tasker, this highly concentrated formula delivers its potent active ingredients to deeper levels of the skin than a cream or a lotion. It is packed with a high concentration of deeply nourishing moisturising ingredients like macadamia and oil-free jojoba, antioxidants, milk thistle extract, and an innovative plant “stem” cell complex that boosts collagen production.
