Ingredient Spotlight: Tocopherol
23/11/2021 2022-03-10 20:16Ingredient Spotlight: Tocopherol
Tocopherol is an increasingly common ingredient in the beauty area, for so many reasons. Also referred to as a form of vitamin E, Tocopherol is an essential fat-soluble nutrient and a really hardworking member of the wellness team. It helps to support the immune system, cellular function, and skin health and is also a known antioxidant with potent anti-inflammatory benefits. It can strengthen the skin’s barrier against sun damage and is also popular as a treatment for minimising the appearance of stretch marks and scars.
But these aren’t the only reasons everyone is falling in love with Tocopherol: it’s an extremely versatile ingredient that you’ll find in everything from lip gloss to conditioner. Â
Read on for a little more about this skin-loving powerhouse…
Â
It’s hydrating
One of the most popular features of Tocopherol is its ability to moisturise and strengthen the skin barrier, making it a must for sensitive skin types in particular. Its powerful antioxidant abilities make it a favourite ingredient for soothing inflammation and redness. And due to Tocopherol’s ability to alleviate dryness, redness, and flaking, the super hydrator is often used to ease the uncomfortable symptoms associated with eczema and psoriasis. However, while limited research has shown that Tocopherol can indeed help with symptoms of psoriasis, it doesn’t necessarily tackle the root issue. Therefore it isn’t recommended for those with severe cases, who should always seek the help of a dermatologist first.
Â
It’s brightening
Whether caused by scarring, hormones, or too much sun exposure, hyperpigmentation is a common concern for so many. A lot of mums-to-be turn to vitamin E during pregnancy to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, while those experiencing weight gain or weight loss can also use pure vitamin E oil for the same purpose. Studies have shown that Tocopherol may help with hyperpigmentation in topical treatments, and even more so when combined with vitamin C.Â
Â
It’s an antioxidant boost
Perhaps most notably, Tocopherol is known for its wealth of antioxidants, which are useful for lessening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Antioxidants are so important to our health, topically and internally, because they prevent oxidative damage to cells by helping to remove free radicals. For the skin, this is usually the result of daily environmental stressors like unprotected sun exposure and air pollution. Free radicals are on a destructive quest to become stable, so they are ready and willing to snatch an electron from anything that comes in its path, including DNA, proteins, connective tissues, and cell membranes. The more you can slow them down, the better your skin will be protected, which is where Tocopherol comes in.
