A chronic condition that unfortunately gets worse over time, rosacea is becoming more and more prevalent in the modern age for so many reasons. Thankfully, science has quickly evolved along with it. Nowadays solutions are increasingly available that can help slow its progression and alleviate some of the frequency and severity of flares.
So what causes rosacea?
Rosacea is in your genes, and while we cannot alter our genetic makeup, we can change the way that our genes are expressed. A milder version will usually make itself known as facial redness (although having facial redness doesn’t necessarily mean that you have rosacea), while more aggressive versions cause pimple-like bumps on your cheeks and nose. Triggers include spicy foods, the sun, and irritating skin care ingredients (particularly retinols, exfoliants, and anything acid-based), as well as – you guessed it – stress.
If I have it, what can I do?
On the medical front, there are several medications and creams that can help rosacea sufferers, some with the kind of unpleasant side effects that often come alongside a quick fix. We won’t go into them here as we most definitely aren’t qualified in that area, but seeing your GP or a dermatologist for an ‘official’ diagnosis is always a recommended first step.
On the professional beauty front, LED light therapy is a great way to tackle and lessen redness, especially at the beginning stages of a flare. LED thickens your skin over time and helps eliminate persistent redness, and it has even been proved to increase the energy in living tissue. This means it stimulates collagen production, reduces inflammation, and speeds healing.
What about natural or clean beauty solutions?
The first thing to do is re-look at how you cleanse your face, as when you use harsher cleansers it can disrupt the skin’s barrier and make rosacea flares worse, as well as hang around for longer.
Cleanse carefully instead, using a nourishing oil in the cooler months and a delicate cream formula whenever you like. Trilogy’s certified natural Very Gentle Cleansing Cream, delicately cleanses and removes make-up without drying or irritating sensitised and reactive skins, and is blissfully fragrance-free cream formula and dermatologically tested. It works to remove impurities and refresh skin with specialist natural ingredients including essential fatty acid-rich camelia, nourishing antioxidant maqui berry and the brand’s own soothing breakthrough botanical complex, Syricalm®.
There is also a beautiful serum to pair it with called Very Gentle Calming Serum. The high performing beauty soothes and hydrates fragile or intolerant skins with effective natural SOS skin calming ingredients. Also fragrance-free and dermatologically tested, it has been expertly formulated to deliver immediate comfort while smoothing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. With ingredients like antioxidant-rich maqui berry and green tea to help fight free radical damage, and the aforementioned Syricalm® to calm, it also includes calendula and chamomile to help reduce inflammation. Try popping Trilogy’s certified organic Very Gentle Restoring Oil over the top to further soothe and hydrate – it’s a super effective blend of pure plant oils like antioxidant-rich maqui berry oil, apricot oil to soothe and sea buckthorn to help restore softness and comfort.Â
And like all skin types, rosacea sufferers shouldn’t leave the house without a great sunblock in place to protect against our harsh sun. A clean beauty superstar, we can’t recommend Suntegrity Natural Moisturising Face Sunscreen & Primer SPF 30 enough to all of our customers. It’s a rich but non-greasy, UV chemical-free sunscreen that offers Broad Spectrum Protection against damaging UVA & UVB rays. It also comes with skincare benefits in the form of youth promoting antioxidants, and is a true triple threat as it functions as a moisturiser, sunscreen and make-up primer all in one. Non-nano sized zinc oxide means it not only protects the skin from the damaging UVA and UVB rays, but it also soothes and calms the skin – zinc oxide well known for its anti-inflammatory properties that often help skin conditions like rosacea.
