Spotlight Ingredient: Here’s Why You Should Try Calendula

A favourite with skincare aficionados and scientists alike, calendula extract is an ingredient that we can’t get enough of. Read on for why, and where you’ll find it…

What is Calendula?

Calendula officinalis, also known as pot marigold, is a flowering plant that is native to the Mediterranean region. Its bright, golden flowers and deliciously herbaceous aroma make it a popular plant in gardens, but it also harbours some serious health benefits. A herb that has been used for centuries by many cultures and traditions, including by cultures in its native Mediterranean region, you’ll also find it put to good use in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine.

Calendula extract is known for its numerous benefits in addressing skin concerns, including acne and irritation. For skincare purposes, what you’re applying to your skin is actually calendula oil. The oil is extracted from the petals, stems, and seeds – much like rose is typically rose oil. It is widely considered safe to use and is even recognised by the World Health Organization for its properties.

What are its key benefits?

First up, it helps reduce sensitivity and soothes irritation. Calendula’s skin-soothing benefits can likely be attributed to its fabulous anti-inflammatory properties and ability to limit trans-epidermal water loss, which in turn strengthens the skin’s defences against potential irritants.

Secondly, it is rich in skin-loving, natural antioxidants and thus the ability to help protect the skin from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress describes the damage that occurs when the skin is exposed to free radicals. These damaging compounds form after exposure to stressors like UV radiation or pollution, and accumulate on the skin. Without intervention, free radicals can alter cellular DNA, ultimately resulting in damage to skin health essentials like collagen and elastin. Calendula is rich in antioxidant compounds, including flavonoids, polyphenols, and carotenoids. These help neutralise the aforementioned free radicals, limiting the effect they can have on the skin.

Lastly, in addition to antioxidants, studies show that calendula flower extract is rich in various skin-friendly oils. Though the exact quantities of these compounds vary depending on where the flowers were grown, when they were harvested, and how the extract was made, research indicates that calendula seeds typically include a high concentration of linoleic and calendic acid. Linoleic acid is the most abundant fatty acid in the skin’s natural moisture barrier and is involved in maintaining the skin barrier’s proper functioning.
